Main Goals
The main goals of the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica are the following:
- Promote the progress of engineering and architecture, as well as of the sciences, arts, and occupations related to them.
- Ensure the propriety of the professions, regulate their practice, and oversee compliance with the provisions in the law, bylaws, and special regulations of the Colegio Federado, as well as with the provisions in the laws and regulations about the fields of application of its member associations
- Foster the educational, social, economic, technical, artistic, and legal conditions needed for the evolution of the disciplines that comprise it and cooperate with state and private institutions in everything that implies improving the country’s development.
- Encourage the disciplines’ dynamic contribution to matters of public interest by appointing permanent commissions to analyze and study national problems.
- Organize, sponsor, and participate in congresses, seminars, publications, conferences, exhibits, and every activity that aims at disseminating and advancing its disciplines and to promote technique, arts, and culture.
- Defend its members’ rights and manage or agree on, whenever possible, the assistance deemed necessary to protect its members.
- Issue opinions and advise State agencies, organism, associations, and public and private institutions on matters under the competence of CFIA’s member associations.
- Keep the spirit of union among its various member associations and promote their mutual collaboration and the integration of the disciplines.
- Promote the rapprochement and cooperation with other professional federations, societies, and associations of Costa Rican and foreign technicians and, in particular, help achieve the goals of the Central American professional integration.
- Expressly exhort the creation, within each of its member associations, of those groups agreed on by their affiliates involved in related activities or specializations to forge a closer relationship among these professionals. The recognition and relationships of these groups with the respective associations will be governed by means of special regulations.

Historical process of the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica

July 3, 1903 - Creation of the Facultad Técnica de La República
The Facultad Técnica de la República was created by Decree No. 34 signed with an “Execute” order by the then President of the Republic Ascensión Esquivel Ibarra and its Secretary of State Leonidas Pacheco.

July 18, 1903 - First General Assembly of the Facultad Técnica de La República
The first General Assembly was held in the home of its temporary president Engineer Lesmes Jiménez Bonnefil. It was attended by 26 professionals in the following disciplines: civil engineering, geometricians, mechanical engineers, and agronomists. Engineer Luis Matamoros Sandoval was elected as first president. The members of the eight commissions set forth in its Organic law were also appointed at this meeting. In August 1903, the Facultad was composed of 41 members, all of whom had graduated in engineering schools in Europe or the United States between December 18, 1867, and October 20, 1902.

July 23, 1912 - Name change to Facultad de Ingeniería de Costa Rica
By means of Decree No. 19 of the Constitutional Congress the name of the Facultad Técnica de la República was changed to Facultad de Ingeniería de Costa Rica. The Decree was signed by the ten President of the Republic Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno and his Secretary of State Nicolás Oreamuno at the offices of this public institution. At the time, its headquarters were located on First Street and Eighth Avenue in San José.

November 12, 1941 - Creation of the Colegio de Ingenieros
The Universidad de Costa Rica was created by Law No. 262 on August 26, 1940. Once it started its academic activities on March 07, 1941, educational activities were then moved from the Facultad to the recently created School of Engineering. In that same year, the Colegio de Ingenieros was created by Law No. 22 on November 12, 1941.

July 4, 1951 - Name change to Colegio de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos (C.I.A.)
The General Assembly approved the change of name to Colegio de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos (C.I.A.).

December 17, 1971 - Creation of the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica (C.F.I.A.)
The Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica was created by Law No. 4925, signed by the then President José Figueres Ferrer. Its first Article reads as follows:
The following terms will have the following meanings in this law:
a) "Colegio Federado" means Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica.
b) "Colegios" means the various member associations that form the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica.
c) "Assembly of Representatives" means the Assembly formed by the Members of the Boards of Directors of the various associations and their delegates.
d) "General Assembly" means the Assemblies of each of the member associations.
e) "General Board of Directors" means the Board of Directors of the Colegio Federado formed by Members of the Boards of Directors of each member association.
f) "Board of Directors" means each of the member associations
The main goal of the Colegio Federado is to promote the progress of engineering and architecture, as well as of the sciences, arts, and occupations related to them.
Its headquarters were located at the corner of 42nd Street and 4th Avenue in Sabana Este, where it remained from November 1963 to October 1981. The Colegio de Ingenieros Eléctricos, Mecánicos e Industriales was also created on this date by Law No. 4925. -
October 23, 1973 - Creation of the Colegio de Ingenieros Topógrafos de Costa Rica
The Colegio de Ingenieros Topógrafos de Costa Rica was created by Law No. 5361.

December 22, 1975 - Land purchase for CFIA’s new headquarters
The land to build the new headquarters was purchased for ¢1.850.000,00 in Curridabat, six kilometers away from San Jose downtown. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 18, 1976. Today the new, modern, and magnificent building of the Colegio Federado stands tall and dominates its surroundings, thus culminating the long-lasting yearnings and aspiration of all its members. The new building opened on October 25, 1981.

July 30, 1981 - Creation of the Colegio de Ingenieros Tecnólogos
The Colegio de Ingenieros Tecnólogos was created by Law No. 6321 dated April 27, 1979.
