The global economic crisis is at its height. The economies squeeze tighter in a spiral effect and fewer resources are available, which translates into less consumption. In addition, fear and insecurity is faced in financial institutions. The crisis is so real, that it seems we are making up a symbiotic relationship, a hateful but apparent relationship. The recovery, in our field’s terminology, will be a different development curve, with a different slope and a new dynamic. What used to be a priority before the crisis will be, in many instances, unnecessary in the future. The basic and natural, will always be the priority; that is, sustainable human development.
It is the task of engineers’ organizations, to trigger in their members the need of a comprehensive analysis of each country’s reality. We are to encourage professionals in engineering to contribute to a new order of priorities in the development. Engineering organizations should also function as government consultants in their reactivation programs. A consulting based on the use of the best and most effective engineering practices, that promote anti-corruption measures and academic programs improvement, which can provide new professionals with the best tools based on equity and professional ethics.
In UPADI, we are willing to assist member organizations in these goals to eventually make out of the 60th anniversary of the organization the starting point of a renewed innovation effort for engineering.
