The sorrowful circumstances of our Haitian brothers and sisters, with the fragile economic and human condition of their country following the disastrous earthquake of last month, is an urgent call for both reflection and fellowship rather than for charity as such. We all need to show our solidarity as members and beneficiaries of the global community.
UPADI has undertaken the task of bringing together and motivating engineering associations in the Americas to share their experience and knowledge to help Haiti. This generous and supportive effort has to be effective and opportune; as such, it must be well analyzed and planned.
What should be kept firmly in mind, however, is the precept that nations cannot provide solidarity by themselves, but rather through the individuals that comprise them. Such assistance has a human dimension even at the very moment that it is being carried out by an entity or a government.
